Editorial Brand Guide

Your brand can include your logo, colors, fonts, and messaging. Creating a simple visual and editorial brand guide will help you develop visually consistent and recognizable marketing materials and build a consistent message.

Brand Messaging

Your message can include your goals, mission statement, how you got started, why you are in business, and why you are passionate about what you do. What is important to you and your company? How can you connect with your clients and help them achieve their goals? Don’t be afraid to let your own personality come out in your brand’s personality.

Use photos and graphics that support your brand and goals. Is your brand caring, calming, enthusiastic, rugged, competitive or adventurous? You’ll want to include photos that demonstrate those qualities and colors that instill those feelings.

Expertise

Emphasizing your expertise and how you bring value to your clients is key to building an ongoing relationship with your clients. Your brand should distinguish you from your competitors and will build your reputation in the market. 

Include a description of your workflow, processes, and photos of ongoing or completed projects or other work results to provide your clients with an example of what they can expect.

Conclusion

Your brand should provide a clear and consistent message, a recognizable logo and use colors, photos and graphics that support your brand’s personality.

We had a fantastic time chatting about how my perspective on networking has evolved over the years—especially the shift from networking as an employee to networking as a business owner.

Early in my career, imposter syndrome held me back. The idea of “putting myself out there” felt intimidating and uncomfortable. I never felt like I had anything to contribute to a conversation. But over time, my view of networking shifted.

One of the biggest mindset changes for me came from reading "Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi. That book truly changed how I approached networking. If you haven’t read it, check it out at your local library or buy a copy from your local bookstore—there are so many valuable insights in those pages. ​

What Networking Means to Me Now

Today, networking isn’t about making a pitch or collecting business cards—it’s about building authentic relationships. It’s an opportunity to get to know people as people, not just their job titles or businesses.

When I started my business, I found myself needing help with everything—studio space, graphic design, printing, branding, you name it. Thankfully, through earlier networking efforts, I already had some great connections. And now, I’ve grown my network even more and can easily refer others to trusted professionals. That’s an incredibly empowering and fulfilling feeling.

Tips for the Networking-Nervous

During our chat, Charity asked me to share advice for those who might feel anxious about networking or unsure of where to start. My biggest tip? Redefine what networking means to you. Think of it as simply meeting new people and being curious about them.

Start in places where you naturally have something in common with others. Some great starting points:
  • Volunteering for a cause you care about
  • Church, temple, or other community gatherings
  • Your kids’ sports or school events—connect with other parents
  • Adult sports leagues or dance classes
  • Continuing education or professional development classes

Networking doesn’t always happen at a “networking event.” Sometimes, it’s just about staying open and curious wherever you are.

A Couple of Networking Wins

Charity also asked me to share a couple of recent networking success stories.

At a recent Vancouver Chamber Business After Hours event, I struck up a casual conversation with someone who was attending for the first time. We chatted about the event, LinkedIn, and life in general. Before she left, we connected on LinkedIn—and about a week later, she reached out for more information about my headshot sessions!

Another great moment came at a Ridgefield Chamber Coffee Connections meetup. These events are super low-key—they take place at a cozy coffee shop and feature a round-robin of introductions (name, business, and an icebreaker question). I met a local website developer and grabbed their card. The very next week, I ran into someone else whose web developer had ghosted him mid-project. I was able to make an instant connection between the two. That’s the power of building community through networking.

This is especially true for photographers like me, whose work is often tied to specific deadlines and events. For instance, I have a few business clients who need updated headshots regularly, particularly as they onboard new employees. Given their busy schedules, these clients require flexibility, and it’s crucial for me to be available when they need me. But when I decided to take a winter vacation this year, I realized just how important it is to have strong relationships with other photographers to help balance my work and personal life.

Building the Right Relationships: A Case Study

As a photographer, vacationing while managing client expectations can seem nearly impossible. However, by developing strong relationships with other photographers, I was able to keep my business running smoothly while enjoying the break I needed.

For example, I worked with an associate photographer under the Uhacz Photography umbrella to cover client needs while I was away. My associate handled the photo shoots directly with the clients, and I took care of the post-production work—editing the photos and ensuring they met my standards. This arrangement allowed me to take time off, knowing my clients were being taken care of, while still maintaining a seamless experience for them.

Setting Your Associates Up for Success

When choosing an associate photographer, it's critical to ensure they align with your values and business practices. I believe that client experience should remain consistent, no matter who is handling the photography. A successful collaboration starts with clear communication and transparency.

Here are a few ways I set my associates up for success:
  1. Shared Values and Expectations: Before handing off any client work, I make sure my associate understands my approach to professionalism, respect, and customer service. The client should not feel any difference in the quality of service, even though a different photographer is involved.
  2. Client Briefing: I ensure my associate is fully aware of the client’s specific needs, including posing preferences, preferred backgrounds, and the time constraints for each session. This ensures that they meet the client’s expectations without needing me to be physically present.
  3. Fair Compensation: I believe in paying my associates well above the industry standard. Not only does this make them feel valued, but it also ensures they will treat the job with the care and attention it deserves. By fostering this sense of mutual respect, I can build long-term, reliable relationships with my associates.
  4. Clear Communication: One of the keys to a successful partnership is constant communication. Whether it's feedback on a session or discussing future opportunities, being open and honest with your associate helps maintain a smooth working relationship.
By taking these steps, I ensure that both my clients and my associates are set up for success, creating a win-win situation where my business continues to thrive, even when I'm away.

Avoiding Burnout: The Power of Delegation

The life of a solopreneur can be stressful—especially when you’re responsible for every aspect of your business. The constant pressure to meet deadlines, manage clients, and oversee all operational details can quickly lead to burnout. That’s why developing a network of trusted associates is crucial.

Having a group of reliable photographers, I can turn to when needed has allowed me to take the breaks I need without worrying about the impact on my clients. They know they can rely on me, and I know I can count on them.

But it’s not just about taking time off—it’s about avoiding the burnout that comes from trying to do it all yourself. I always try to give back to my community of photographers when I can, helping others in need of last-minute coverage. This spirit of collaboration not only strengthens relationships but also fosters a sense of camaraderie in an otherwise solitary profession.

Building Your Own Community

If you haven’t yet built a network of collaborators or associates, now is the perfect time to start. Not all photographers are open to collaboration, but there are many who value the power of working together, sharing knowledge, and helping each other out when the need arises.

Here’s how you can begin:
  • Join Photography Groups: Whether online or in-person, find communities where photographers are open to collaboration. Look for local meetups, photography forums, or social media groups focused on mutual support.
  • Reach Out to Local Photographers: If you find someone whose work you admire, reach out and introduce yourself. Even if they’re not available to collaborate immediately, building a connection can open doors for future partnerships.
  • Offer Value: Collaboration is a two-way street. Make sure you are offering value in return. Whether it’s referring clients to others, sharing your expertise, or simply being there to help in a pinch, demonstrating goodwill will help you build strong, reciprocal relationships.
  • Seek Like-Minded Solopreneurs: Look for other solopreneurs who share your work ethic and values. Building a network of like-minded individuals makes it easier to support one another and grow together.

October

It is October and that means the holiday season starts on October 31! It kicks off with Halloween and doesn’t stop until early January. Whew! I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

I love handing out the full-size candy bars on Halloween and hearing the kids exclaim “Wow, it's a big candy bar,” and then watching them run back to their parents to tell them all about how they scored. I also really love seeing the fun costumes and that includes the older kids. Some people think once you are in high school you should stop trick or treating - not me. It brings me joy to see the older kids out with friends having fun.

November

This month kicks off with Day of the Dead. Then we go right into the month of giving thanks. This can kick in the time for stressful travel planning and cooking. But it is also a great time to stop and take a moment to appreciate all we can be grateful for the little and the big things. 

I start each day by listing three things that I am grateful for. Some days are easier than others. The list can range from being grateful for the health of myself, my husband, and our old lady kitties, to having a working washing machine or coffee maker.

December

December is full of holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and others. It is the month that has the most varied traditions, ranging from religious to secular and from state to state or family to family. Not to mention the food! I love this month the most, learning about other traditions and cultures. 

Then we close out the calendar year.

January - How did that happen?

And then just like that, we are in a new year. We have new goals ahead of us and are left with the holiday glow…until the tree comes down and all the holiday decorations are put away.

The holiday season is a wonderful time for friends and family to come together to make new memories and reminisce. I love pulling out the old photo albums and having some good laughs about gifts that year, jokes we played on each other, and countless other things.

Senior year! Wow ~ that went fast, didn’t it? Now is a great time to book your high school senior portrait session. Not sure where to start? Keep reading!

How to Find a Photographer

You may not be sure how to start the process of finding a photographer or how to choose a photographer in your area. My top three tips are:
  1. Referrals from friends or family members
  2. Google search (keywords: portrait photographer, senior photographer, city you are in, etc.), read the reviews
  3. Facebook city groups - folks often ask for recommendations in these groups 
​I recommend selecting two or three photographers and then look at their websites and social media feeds. Review to see if you like their style of photography, determine if they shoot at a location you want (like the coast, on a hiking trail, urban setting, etc.). Then look at their pricing packages. 

Once you have narrowed it down to a couple of photographers, schedule a quick call to make sure you like the photographer. It is important to have a good rapport with the photographer so the student feels comfortable with the process.

Pricing questions are the most common and yet each photographer has a different way of packaging their work. Some offer digitals only with optional prints and some offer prints with optional digitals. The number of digital images can vary as well. Keep this in mind as you are looking for a photographer and the pricing to see if it works with the budget you have in mind. 

What to Bring / Showcase You!

photographer will have different packages. Some will have a “client closet” where you can borrow some of their fun clothing options. If that interests you, be sure to make that one of your questions.

Many schools have “senior” shirts or letterman jackets. Or perhaps they are in ROTC and want to wear their uniform. These pieces can be included in the photo session to help “stamp” this time of your life. 

When I work with seniors, I encourage them to bring personal items like a skateboard, musical instrument, etc. something that is meaningful for them and portrays this time of their life. 

Also, I ask them to bring their favorite shirt or hat to change into to get a couple of different pictures. Let’s get the photos they will love and images their parents will love, even if they aren’t the same photo.

For the parents, I invite them to join in for a special photo with their senior. It’s an opportunity for all to remember the special time. Capturing the moment in time for them and their child. These also make great gifts for grandparents and for the seniors.

Finding the Location

We have some beautiful areas in the PNW from Vancouver to the Oregon Coast. Below are just a few ideas of areas that I enjoy using as a backdrop:

  1. Studio - I have a studio location which is handy for rainy days
  2. Downtown Vancouver (Esther Short Park, murals)
  3. Vancouver Waterfront / Grants Street Pier (west side)
  4. Vancouver Waterfront / under I5 bridge and to the East to McMenamins
  5. Officer’s Row
  6. Fort Vancouver / Fort / Gardens / Land Bridge
  7. Lacamas Lake
  8. Salmon Creek Greenway
  9. Moulton or Lucia Falls
  10. Seaside, Oregon (Yup ~ happy to do a session here without any travel fees!)
A few places to avoid: 1) railroads (private property and potentially deadly) and parks or buildings that require permits (without obtaining one) or that do not allow photography (for example, Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge, Chinese Gardens, Japanese Gardens, etc.).

The photographer will be able to really help with ideas. During a consultation call or questionnaire, you may be asked for information about preferences (like country, urban, etc.) to help with the selection process. Many photographers have spots they are familiar with and like to work in because they know the lighting, parking situation, etc. So they are great resources. You are not alone with coming up on a location.

This August I celebrate five years of being in business. Sometimes, it feels like yesterday that I was putting together my website and trying to figure out all the initial steps to “hang my shingle” as officially open for business.

I'm Grateful for:

  • ​All of my clients that have trusted me with their photography needs.
  • My husband (and biggest supporter).
  • My community of photographers.
  • My network for believing in me to refer me to your friends, family, and business associates.

Tips for Photographers Looking to Start a Business:

  • Your website is the one thing that you solely control - your images, your content, show your brand and connect with your ideal client
  • Learn about SEO
  • Branding - read up or get a consultant to help you with your branding (not just colors and logo but that is a good start)
  • Social media is fickle, be prepared to adjust how you use it (a LOT!)
  • Continuing education is very important - attend conferences and workshops
  • Networking with potential clients AND other photographers will serve you well throughout your career 
  • Surround yourself with people who are supportive (personally and professionally)
  • It is a LOT of work - but worth it
  • Remember WHY you do what you do.
  • Be professional - this is a business not a hobby. What that means to me is to treat everyone with respect, respond to inquiries timely, meet deadlines, collaborate with other professional photographers. Educate clients on what your packages include so they do not have surprises about pricing or what to expect on the day of their session.

It has been an incredible journey so far,  and I’m looking forward to seeing where the next five take me and my business.

Earlier this year a photographer I know put out a model call for a workshop she was coordinating called Escape to the Coast which was scheduled for mid-May in the Astoria, Oregon area. She wanted to have regular folks be the models. Why, you may wonder? It is helpful to the photographer to have a model who may be inexperienced or even uncomfortable in front of the camera. A future client will need direction on how to pose and move so the photographer can learn how to communicate and direct the shoot. (It is not as easy as you may think.)

Normally, I would love to attend the workshop and BEHIND the camera lens. One of my personal goals this year is to really push myself out of my comfort zone. In that spirit, I volunteered to be a model for this workshop. I even told a couple of people that I was doing this to help hold me accountable.

The Workshop

Astoria, Oregon was the backdrop for the workshop. The coast, even in May, can be hit or miss in the PNW for weather. The workshop is two days with several classes and three different modeling locations. Several photographers did sessions about how to use the environment, natural light, posing, and more.

The gowns we wore were provided by Golden Hour Gowns and all of them were simply gorgeous.

Me…

Like most of my own clients and potential clients, I worried about how I would look and where to put my hands so I’m not completely awkward looking in the pictures. Also, I have recently put on a few extra pounds and wasn’t feeling too “pretty” and then I also noticed MORE gray hair. Starting to feel frazzled, I told myself that “it will be fun and a wonderful experience” so just do it already.

So I did it! Friday afternoon, my first session, I did my hair and makeup and then met up at the location with the group coordinator for my assigned dress for the day. That day I wore a red flowy dress and I felt like a princess. My insecurities began to lessen. The next issue was - if you know me, then you know - I’m not the most graceful person, and the dress had a lot of material and I worried about tripping on it. (Happy to report I didn’t fall flat on my face or backside!)

It was mellow while the coordinators talked and then we broke out into groups. Each model had a handful of photographers who took turns having me pose in different ways and doing photos. Again, I started to feel the panic. But then every single one of those photographers put me at ease. Same with the other models. We had a blast.

On Saturday it was easier for me to get out the door. First, since I had done it once already and had a better idea of what to do. Second, because I knew I had another beautiful dress waiting for me. Third, and lastly, because I knew that it would be fun. It was a BLAST!

Photographers who attended have been sharing the photos that they took. Each one is talented and pushed themselves out of their own comfort zones by experimenting with lighting, new editing techniques, etc.

I’m so happy to share a few of those images with you below. It is so cool to see their different styles of shooting and editing.

These ceremonies culminate years of hard work, growth, dedication, and sacrifices. Let's explore the unique and poignant moments that make these graduations so special, and how photographers can play a crucial role in preserving these memories.​

Graduation Regalia ​

Two iconic elements of graduation ceremonies are the cap and gown. These symbols carry a deep significance, representing the conclusion of this step in their academic journey. Some will go on to higher education, attend a trade school, or join the military, while others may take time off to learn more about themselves before settling on their next step in life. The caps are often customized to the individual from their grad year to names of loved ones, hobbies, etc. They are deeply personal and often kept for years to come. While the gown will be easily forgotten, used for a future Halloween costume, etc.

Aside from the cap and gowns, other pieces can be included as well. Individuals who reach a certain GPA will also have additional cords to wear. These cords are often color-coded to show their specific status. Others who belonged to a club may have ribbons indicating their involvement or cultural regalia incorporated into their full graduation outfit.

As a photographer, capturing the details of these traditional attire elements can add a timeless touch to the photographs, highlighting the achievement and transition to the next chapter in life.

Moments with Friends and Families

Graduation day is a rollercoaster of emotions for both graduates and their families. Some family members may have never reached this level of education and the level of importance is elevated and very meaningful. Graduations mark a significant milestone in a person’s life - official adulthood for high school seniors or new career adventures for college students. 
Graduations also celebrate the friendships formed along the way. High school seniors have childhood friendships with many in their class. However, in college, one may be thrown together with peers who are also embarking on their own for the first time. The friendships formed are different and can make a lasting impression and really help shape you. 
Photographers can focus on capturing the genuine camaraderie and joy shared between friends, whether it's the excitement of tossing caps into the air or the bittersweet goodbyes as classmates embark on different paths. Moving into the next phase of your life, it is important to capture these moments. You will look back on those photos and time will fall away and take you right back to that day.

The Power of Details: Big & Small

Graduation portraits should capture big and small details. In the hustle and bustle of graduation day, it's best to have a plan to ensure capturing all the things that are unique to a graduation. For example, graduation caps decorated with personal touches, diplomas being handed over, or subtle expressions that reveal the depth of the graduates' emotions. All of these details add layers to the narrative, making the photographs more meaningful.
Individual and group portraits play a crucial role in documenting the essence of the day. Plan and ask for specific wish list images they have so you can be ready after the chaos of the ceremony. Are there any specific teachers, staff members, or friends they want to be sure to include in any photos? Identify family members ahead of time to also make sure you are able to capture everyone.

Conclusion

High school and college graduations are pivotal moments in the lives of individuals, and photographers have the incredible responsibility of preserving these memories for a lifetime. Weight Worries: The Power of Posing and Clothing

Let’s address the weight concern right away. Our lives are filled with many different sizes. Embracing where we are now is important. Personally, this is one of my own big struggles. I’ve had weight issues my entire life. Hiding in photos was something I used to do. Learning to embrace where you are in your journey of life is important. The right wardrobe and posing can make an incredible impact on the way photography turns out. Dark, solid colors and well-fitted outfits are universally flattering, helping to highlight strengths and minimize any perceived imperfections. My role as a photographer is to guide clients in selecting outfits that make them feel confident and at ease while posing them in the most flattering way.

Acne Woes: A Touch of Post-Production Love

Skin imperfections can be a significant source of anxiety for some clients. I always emphasize that a little post-production magic can work wonders. Advanced editing tools allow me to subtly address blemishes and ensure that the final images reflect the true beauty of my clients. It's essential for clients to understand that imperfections are a part of being human, and my goal is to enhance their natural beauty rather than create unrealistic standards.

The "Not Photogenic" Myth: Unveiling Your True Beauty

Many people believe they are not naturally photogenic, but this is often a misconception. I make a point to remind my clients that everyone has unique features that can be highlighted to create stunning portraits. It's common for clients to feel awkward or unsure about how to pose during a photoshoot. The most common concern is: What do I do with my hands? I always recommend using pockets, as they create a natural and relaxed look. Another is: How can I lose 10 pounds instantly? Posing! Some poses may feel awkward and unnatural but will look good in the photo. I guide the session, so my clients can relax and enjoy the process while I capture authentic and natural moments. ​

  1. Unexpected Entrepreneurship: Believe it or not, I never thought I'd own a business. Yet, here I am, loving every moment of this wild entrepreneurial adventure. It's amazing how life takes unexpected turns!
  2. Roots in the Military: Coming from a military family has instilled in me a deep sense of discipline, organization, and adaptability. These qualities find their way into my work.
  3. Wanderlust at Heart: I've always dreamt of traveling the world, and while it's a work in progress, each destination I explore fuels my passion for capturing diverse cultures and landscapes through my lens.
  4. Dance Enthusiast: From salsa to swing, I love to dance! It's not just a hobby; it's an expression of joy and energy that often translates into the dynamic and lively compositions in my photographs. I would not win any competitions, however, it makes me so happy!
  5. Noise is My Muse: Whether it's the hum of the TV or the rhythm of music, I need a bit of background noise to concentrate. It's my secret sauce for staying in the creative flow.
  6. Surviving with Succulents: Despite lacking a green thumb, I've somehow managed to keep some succulents and spider plants alive. I even have one spider plant that I got from a friend maybe 17 years ago that is still thriving. Amazing, right!
  7. Morning Rituals with Coffee: There's something magical about the quiet moments of the morning paired with a cup (or two) of coffee. It's my ritual that kickstarts each day while I run through my list of things I’m grateful for and what I want to focus on for the day.
  8. TV Commercial Star: Yes, you read that right! I've had my moment in the spotlight, appearing in a TV commercial for a car dealership. It was a fun and unexpected experience when I was an employee at the dealership and they needed an extra person to be a “shopper.” No lines to worry about ~ Whew!
  9. Forever a Learner: I have a deep love for learning, constantly challenging myself with new languages, computer programs, etc. This thirst for knowledge translates into a commitment to staying at the forefront of photography trends and techniques.
  10. Canine Connections: If you have a furry friend, be it a friend or a stranger, you can bet that I'll say hello to the doggie first when we meet in public. There's something about the unconditional joy and innocence in their eyes that instantly warms my heart. So if you have a fur baby that you want included in your portrait session ~ I’m all in!
